about

A few weeks back, Rod Johnson (a/k/a downburst) wrote some lyrics [ fiftyninety.fawmers.org/song/6629 ], and in the liner notes he mentioned that he heard it as the kind of tune I might do. How flattering! Anyway, I tuned my acoustic guitar to open-D, got out my ceramic slide, and soon this fast Mississippi Fred McDowell-like song emerged. :-)

I recorded it in a single take into my H4N Zoom recorder.

lyrics

People keep their distance
They can smell it on my breath
People raise their voices
They act like I am deaf
Dog whiskey chased me up a tree
Dog whiskey will be the end of me
Dog whiskey hung me out to dry
Dog whiskey wish that I could die

Once I was like you, my friend
Dog whiskey laid me low
Now I let dog whiskey
Tell me where I should go
Dog whiskey ain’t no fancy breed
Dog whiskey ain’t got no pedigree
Dog whiskey won’t stay on its leash
Dog whiskey showin’ me its teeth

It started in the mornings
I only needed some
Hair of the dog that bit me
But the worst was yet to come
Cuz I made the acquaintance
Of the whole dog pretty soon
I had that old dog whiskey in me
Howlin’ at the moon

Some days I think I might overcome it in the end
Some days I admit the truth, dog whiskey’s my best friend
Dog whiskey chased me up a tree
Dog whiskey put a collar on me
Dog whiskey got a nasty bite
Dog whiskey makes me feel all right, all right

about

Deaf Steever Winnipeg, Manitoba

I try to come up with ideas and riffs that catch my ear, and then I piece 'em together until something (hopefully) slightly catchy and coherent emerges. I reckon that sums up my approach to songwriting. :-)

"Well, sir, I just make it sound like I think it ought to." - Mississippi John Hurt, when asked how he created his songs.

Cheers from Winnipeg, Canada, y'all! Go, Jets, go!!!
