about

Kaitlyn and I wrote this tune in the autumn of 2009. She was a little over 2-years old at the time. Here's the back story: I took her out for walk during the summer, and at one point, Kaitlyn started singing this little melody, "Mo Tang! Mo Tang! Mo mo mo mo ... Mo tang!" I asked her what song that was and she said she just made it up. So anyway, we got home and over the next month or so, I wrote some chords to her melody, and we'd often jam on it. Finally, one day, I thought, "I really ought to record this". So I recorded the entire backing track and then tricked Kaitlyn into singing in time to the song: I had the backing track on my headphones while I strummed my acoustic guitar like I usually did when we jammed; she had the microphone and sang and thus I recorded her vocals. A little tweaking in the mixing phase and voila! We had ourselves a rockin' tune! Kaitlyn's first songwriting credit. :-)

Funnily enough, to this day, Kaitlyn has no idea what the words "mo tang" mean. Plus, she didn't use it in the final track, not even once. hehe

about

Deaf Steever Winnipeg, Manitoba

I try to come up with ideas and riffs that catch my ear, and then I piece 'em together until something (hopefully) slightly catchy and coherent emerges. I reckon that sums up my approach to songwriting. :-)

"Well, sir, I just make it sound like I think it ought to." - Mississippi John Hurt, when asked how he created his songs.

Cheers from Winnipeg, Canada, y'all! Go, Jets, go!!!
