about

Part of what made FAWM, 50/90, and Rocktober so fun for me the past few years was interacting with the late Randy Christopher. He was one of the funniest and most talented guys I knew (though regretfully, I never had the privilege to meet him in person). He was a true gem of a human being. FAWM just isn't the same without him. :-(

This tune is intended as a tribute to RC. Even before I started it, I knew it would be a fingerpicked instrumental in open-D tuning (utilizing alternating bass) - because THAT's the kinda tune that always got RC's attention! He invariably made mention of the "steady thumb work" in some of my songs. During 50/90 2013, in a comment on one of my instrumentals, he described my thumbed alternating bass notes as "solid as a mountain". So RC came up with the title of this one. :-)

I intentionally wrote this in under an hour (and it shows! It needs refinement, methinks) in honor of RC and his incredible ability to write/record amazingly perfect tunes in mind-bogglingly short periods of time. I just can't do that!! Gosh, that man was talented.

This was recorded in my basement with the dryer and furnace whirring in the background. Even though this take wasn't perfect, I liked the "feel" of it.

Cheers, RC! You are greatly missed.

about

Deaf Steever Winnipeg, Manitoba

I try to come up with ideas and riffs that catch my ear, and then I piece 'em together until something (hopefully) slightly catchy and coherent emerges. I reckon that sums up my approach to songwriting. :-)

"Well, sir, I just make it sound like I think it ought to." - Mississippi John Hurt, when asked how he created his songs.

Cheers from Winnipeg, Canada, y'all! Go, Jets, go!!!
